PRESS RELEASE

For Immediate Release

Catch the New Fort Bend County Express!

Direct Service to the Texas Medical Center

Fort Bend County proudly announces a new commuter bus service, Fort Bend County Express, for residences traveling to the Texas Medical Center campus.  Now residence can choose between mass transit or paying nearly $4 a gallon for gasoline.  Any Fort Bend County resident can try this convenient and cost saving service for no charge during the first week of service from September 2, 2008 – September 5, 2008.

Fort Bend County Express offers two pick-up locations located at University of Houston-Sugar Land campus at 14000 University Boulevard and at the First Colony Mall AMC theatre at 3301 Town Center Boulevard in Sugar Land.  Beginning the week of September 8, 2008 the fare rate for travel to and from the University of Houston-Sugar Land to the Texas Medical Center will be $3.50 one way.  $70 ticket books can be purchased with cash or check from bus drivers beginning September 5, 2008.  Daily tickets can be purchased with cash.  Any change due at time of purchase will be given in the form of $.50 tickets.

Paulette Shelton, the Fort Bend County Transportation Director commented that the service demonstrates how Fort Bend County has matured as the result of growth.  Another benefit to this service is that the Fort Bend County Express offers a guaranteed ride home.  The service provides commuters a way home in the event of a midday emergency, up to three times per calendar year. The program is available to all Fort Bend Country Transportation riders without midday service. To be eligible, riders must register by completing and signing the registration form prior to needing service. Examples of approved emergencies include personal illness, illness of a family member, a death in the family, and unscheduled overtime required by your employer. In the event of an emergency, call 281-633-RIDE or 1-866-751-TRIP. Once a staff member verifies enrollment in the program, a service provider will pick you up from your place of employment and take you to your car. A complete set of rules for the program, along with registration forms are available from bus drivers and will soon be available on-line at www.fortbendcountygov.com under the Public Transportation section of the website.
