DEBRIS MANAGEMENT PROGRAM DETAILS

November 14, 2017

FORT BEND COUNTY, TX –  Fort Bend County is beginning its recovery process in the wake of Hurricane Ike.  A Debris Management plan has been enacted to facilitate the removal of debris left by the hurricane. This program consists of three separate “passes” with the first pass beginning Tuesday, September 16. The first pass will be for vegetative materials. The next pass will take place two or three weeks later with the last pass two or three weeks after that.  Remaining materials at the curb will be picked up on the second and third passes. If you do not get all your debris curbside for the first pass and pick up, you may continue to place remaining debris on right-of-way or curbside for subsequent pickups.

This program is a partnership between Fort Bend County and participating cities in the county. It will cover all unincorporated areas in the County, as well as the cities that had substantial debris cause by Hurricane Ike.  The cities of Sugar Land and Pearland will be initiating their own program in the near future. Private Roads and gated communities are not a part of the debris pick-up program.

Fort Bend County residents are asked to place any storm-generated debris on the public right-of-way, but off of the street as FEMA does not authorize government contractors to enter private property.

  • The public right-of-way is the area of residential property that extends from the street to the sidewalk, ditch, utility pole or easement.
  • Only debris placed on the public right-of-way will be eligible for collection until further notice. This must be located on either the front slope of the ditch or at the curb.
  • Do not let the debris block drainage in culverts or curb drains; this could cause street flooding.
  • Do not place debris near any water meter vault, fire hydrant, or any other above-ground utility or meter. This is to prevent these items from being damaged by the machinery when the debris is collected.
  • “Vegetation” debris includes woody, burnable items such as limbs, vines, leaves, and shrubbery. These items should be placed at the curb; there is no need for bundling or strapping.
  • “Construction and demolition” debris includes items such as fencing, sheetrock, and carpet. This will also be picked up at the curb, but must be placed in a stack separate from the vegetation debris.
  • Bagged leaves will be pickup up by local crews, but MUST not include household trash for the safety of the workers. Make sure the bagged leaves are placed near your debris piles and completely separated from your normal trash collection area.
  • Household garbage should be kept separate from the hurricane debris, and must be picked up by the normal service provider.
  • Please do not park your vehicle in front of the debris. If the debris is blocked, it will not be picked up.

If all debris is not picked up during the initial pass, please continue to place remaining debris at the right-of-way for collection on subsequent passes.  It will take approximately three weeks for the contractor to make the first round of pickups.

Please use the Debris Removal link on the homepage of the county website www.fortbendcountygov.com for additional information and updates on the debris-removal process.
