PRESS RELEASE

For Immediate Release

Fort Bend County Authorizes the Issuance of $73,540,000 for new Courthouse

Fort Bend County, TX- Fort Bend County Commissioners Court unanimously authorized the issuance of $73,540,000 in bonds for the new Justice Center last Tuesday. County officials were very pleased with the low interest rate of 4.4891% and are eager to undertake the project.  County Judge Bob Hebert said, “I am pleased with the very low interest rate, it exceeded my best expectations. Our timing couldn’t have been better, we are now able to expedite the construction of this crtically needed new courthouse with a very low cost of money and a cost of construction well below the original estimates. The taxpayers will get the courthouse ahead of schedule while saving millions of dollars.”

Pierce, Goodwin, Alexander & Linville (PGAL) served as the county’s Design Professional and has provided a viable solution to the County’s growing court needs.  The Justice Center was designed to offer the flexibility of phasing in courtrooms over time as the population and judicial needs continue to grow.  The new Justice Center includes 24 courtrooms, District Clerk offices, County Clerk offices, grand jury space, bailiff area, law library, District Attorney offices, jury assembly space and a tunnel connecting the facility to the Fort Bend County Jail.   For the first time in many years, an adjacent parking garage will provide adequate parking space.

PGAL has completed the design work and most recently Commissioners Court approved negotiations with JE Dunn Construction to serve as the General Contractor.  County Officials are optimistic that construction will be completed by March 2011.  Don Brady, Fort Bend County’s Director of Facilities Management and Planning stated, “This process has been a truly coordinated effort.  I am thankful to those Judges and other Elected Officials who have continued to work hard in moving the Justice Center forward by providing support, dedication and hard work to get this project out of the planning stage and into construction.”
