Fort Bend County Recovery Media Briefing Highlights

November 14, 2017

FORT BEND COUNTY, TX –

  • Earlier today, Fort Bend County Judge Robert Hebert had a teleconference with the mayors of the cities within the county. Approximately 67%, or approximately 123,000 residences, in Fort Bend County were without power on Saturday, Sept. 13. That number was reduced to about 116,000 today, and as of late this afternoon, some of the residents of Pecan Grove regained power. Crews are working around the clock to restore power, and residents are urged to be patient.
  • The curfew for Fort Bend County has expired, but some of the cities still have curfews, so residents should stay informed about the status of their city curfews.
  • Debris cleanup starts Monday with the first of three debris cleanup sweeps. Residents may remove their own debris, or they may take advantage of the county’s debris management program.  The county crews cannot go onto private property, but residents may collect the debris from their property and stack it loosely by the curb for pickup. Do not place the debris on or near hydrants, utility meters, or anything else that could interfere with the debris pickup equipment. Debris that qualifies for this service includes vegetation, timber, construction material, and glass, but not regular household garbage. Regular household garbage should be disposed of in the normal garbage collection manner. The first debris pickup sweep should take place beginning this week, but residents who are not ready for the first sweep may still have their debris picked up over the second and third debris pickups sweeps. Refer to the county’s website at www.co.fort-bend.tx.us  for instructions on how to prepare your debris for removal.
  • School closures for Monday include: Lamar Consolidated ISD, Fort Bend ISD, Katy ISD, Needville ISD, and Stafford MSD. Go to www.co-fort-bend.tx.us for detailed information.
  • Residents should be aware that until power is completely restored in the county, traffic lights may work sporadically. Lights that are not working should be treated by state law as four-way stops.
  • The City of Stafford reports that the water supply from its water district, WCID #2, never lost power and that the water is safe to drink.
  • Fort Bend County offices, libraries, and courts are closed on Monday. Decisions about closures on Tuesday will be announced at a later time.
  • A Red Cross Shelter has been opened for the general public at the First United Methodist Church at 431 Eldridge in Sugar Land.
  • Some stores are reopening as power is restored, but supplies such as ice and water are in short supply. These items are being delivered to the communities, and residents should watch the television for instructions on where and when they will be available.
