Hurricane Ike Advisory

November 14, 2017

Hurricane Ike, no matter when and where it strikes, will be dangerous storm.  Fort Bend County residents need to begin planning now in anticipation of Ike reaching landfall between Corpus Christi and Beaumont, Port Arthur sometime on Saturday, September 13th.  In spite of the unpredictability of the exact location of the storm coming into the State, you can begin preparing now to weather the storm.  If landfalls occurs in Galveston, or counties immediately south of Fort Bend, our County will experience high winds, possible flooding, and significant rainfall.  Fort Bend County is not an evacuation county, we are a pass through.  This means that other coastal counties may evacuate and travel through Fort Bend.

The State planning is well underway and you and your family can make your plans now.  Stay tuned to the AM 1670 for current weather information for our area.  In addition, you should also check the County’s Web Site.  Continue to watch the Houston media for the latest information from other counties that might be evacuating through our area.  Following are some planning tips:

  • Fill your vehicles with fuel and keep them full.
  • Gather a first-aid kit, extra prescription medications, written copies of prescriptions, special medical items, eyeglasses, hearing aids.
  • Keep toilet paper, cleanup supplies, personal hygiene products, special items for babies, the elderly and pets.
  • Keep copies of important documents and records, photo IDs, driver license, proof of residence, account numbers, information you may need to process insurance claims. Maintain in a waterproof container.
  • Have cash (including small bills) because power outages mean banks and ATMs may be unavailable.
  • Have a battery-operated radio, flashlight, extra batteries, extra keys, tools, and NOAA weather radio.
  • Know the plans of other family members too, and have their phone and contact information.
  • Food supplies should include a three-day supply of non-perishable food, one gallon of bottled water per person per day, coolers for food and ice storage, paper plates, plastic utensils, manual can opener.
