PRESS RELEASE

For Immediate Release

Talking Points for Thursday 6 pm press conference

  • The track of the storm has shifted 23 miles to the east, so the far west end of Fort Bend County may escape the brunt of the storm. The storm is expected to begin to impact the county beginning about 10:30 am Friday, and continuing through noon on Saturday.
  • Fort Bend County is not calling for an evacuation. Our residents are to shelter in place. Fort Bend County is a pass-through county; no shelters are available.
  • Traffic is moving well. We have received reports of gas shortages in stations along the evacuation routes, specifically FM 359 north or Highway 90A and along Highway 6 in the Missouri City area. The state is sending fuel, but some of the stations report that they are not receiving those shipments. We are investigating where the disconnect is occurring, and hopefully the problem will be resolved within the next 2 to 3 hours.
  • Residents of Richmond State School are in the process of being evacuated. As of 1 pm today, 70% of the residents and staff were evacuated. As of 6:09 pm today, the last convoy left the campus, and all residents should be safely situated at the Brenham State School by 9:30 pm.
  • We have 350 registered citizens with special needs. They have all been contacted, and most of their needs have been met. Any remaining issues will be resolved within the next few hours.
  • We have met with the cities’ Debris Management coordinators to further define plans to begin recovery after the storm, and to clear any debris left by the storm.
  • We’ve actually received very few calls from concerned residents. The media is doing a great job of keeping the public informed.
  • The County Judge had a conference call at 7:00 pm Thursday evening with the city mayors to discuss/identify any unmet needs.
  • A formal traffic management program was initiated at 1:00 pm today. Law enforcement officers are monitoring traffic. Signage along the evacuation routes is available to direct drivers along the suggested routes. Drivers are encouraged to listen to our county radio station AM 1670 for updates on traffic within the county and suggested alternative routes.
  • Schools within Fort Bend County that have closed include Lamar Consolidated, Fort Bend ISD, Stafford MSD, Needville ISD, Katy ISD, Brazos ISD, Kendleton ISD, Wharton County Junior College, Houston Community College, and the University of Houston campus in Sugar Land.
